Whereas MPEG-4 files (MP4) are a widely used format for audio files, the MPEG-4 format used specifically for iPods is MPEG-4 AVC, also known as M4V. The iTunes program by Apple allows you to convert MP4 files in your iTunes library into an M4V format through the video encoder tool, located in the iTunes' Advanced section. After encoding the file, remove the original MP4 file from iTunes to prevent duplicate videos in your iTunes library.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iTunes 8 or later
  1. Step 1

Open the iTunes program, and click "File" at the top of the iTunes menu on your PC or at the top of the screen on your Macintosh computer.

  2. Step 2

Select "Add File to Library" from the submenu and locate the MP4 file. Double-click the file to add it to the library or click the file to highlight it and click the "Choose' button.

  3. Step 3

Select the "Movies" tab under the Library section in the iTunes source list and select the MP4 file.

  4. Step 4

Select "Advanced" at the top of the iTunes menu and click "Create iPod or iPhone Version" from the submenu.

  5. Step 5

Press "Backspace" or "Delete" key on your computer's keyboard to erase the original MP4 file and click "Delete" on the pop-up box to confirm the file deletion.
